It not only affects your physical and mental health, it also tells on your finances. You may need to move into a house with an extra room; you will have more use of water, gas and electricity. Your bills will definitely increase. Also, maternity leave means a drop in your regular income and then down the line there is the cost of child care. These coupled with the fact that most people have babies in their youth when they are also trying to get established in their careers, means that the decision to have a baby can seriously destabilize one financially, if not prepared. Rich or poor, babies are being born anyway. It is therefore necessary to find ways to cut down on the huge expenses that accompany the birth of a newborn - even more important with the UK's current cost of living crisis.

Here are 6 ways to save money on baby costs.

1. Accept used products from friends and family. In the excitation of expecting a new baby, it is easy to overspend. There are lots of blogs and YouTube videos about what to buy and though mostly helpful, some of the things you will buy will be a waste. We were blessed to have generous senior friends who out of their own good will gave us some of their baby stuff still in perfect condition. It really saved us money especially for the bulkier stuff like baby cot, Moses basket, and baby stroller. However, it is advisable to get a brand new car seat as it must comply with safety rules.

2. Try cheaper nappies. Size 2 Pampers pack of 46 from Tesco is £6 compared to Size 2 Mamia pack of 58 from Aldi which is £2. Just see how much can be saved. In my experience, the Mamia nappy was even more absorbent than Pampers. I also tried Tesco's Fred n Flo Size 2 nappy which was about £3 but I found it worse than Aldi's Mamia and Pampers so I dumped it. Before settling for expensive brands, try out cheaper brands.

3. Breastfeed. I understand that certain situations may impact on one's ability to breastfeed. But breastfeeding, apart from its numerous health benefits, is another way of cutting costs. SMA Pro first infant formula 800g is £11. Other brands are even costlier. Exclusively formula fed neonates can go through one tin within 3 days.

4. Buy cheaper bodysuits. Bodysuits or onesies are those vests that are fastened at the nappy area. They are usually worn beneath a sleepsuit or any other clothing. They are inadvertently going to poo on some of them. Why invest £50 on an expensive bodysuit when one can get 10 for £9. These expensive bodysuits are going to be covered anyway. They look cool in pictures though. Also, babies grow very quickly. If you invest a lot in new born clothes and shoes, they may outgrow them before they get a chance to wear them. My baby came out big. He did not get to wear some of the new born shoes we were gifted.

5. Throw a baby shower/gender reveal. While you should not count on gifts from friends or make that the reason for throwing a shower, gifts from friends and family go a long way in cutting baby costs.

6. Apply for child benefits. Check to see if you are eligible for any available child benefits and apply. You could get help with childcare costs or a monthly stipend for the child. It may not be much but, a little is better than nothing.

A newborn baby brings joy but can put a strain on the family finances. I hope with these few points of mine, you are able to save a few dollars, pounds or Naira. Please comment below with additional tips.

Radiant ~ September 2022

Since they do not rely on God, they go after knowledge with all their might and work hard because they have only themselves to trust.

But believers in the Lord Jesus Christ are at a more advantageous position. The devil has been defeated and sin has no dominion over us. We have been set up for success already. We should not then shoot ourselves in the foot by allowing ignorance, laziness and cowardice rob us of our blessings.

I am still having to deal with number 2. Last year, I wrote about my experience of stammering at work here. So much has happened in the past 365 days that my current workplace experience is almost the opposite of what I wrote last year. I speak quite fluently these days. I make lots of phone calls with no problems. I do not stumble on the NHS number anymore.

I now work in a GP surgery rather than a hospital ward. So my consultations are in the confines of a room with just the patient and me, and sometimes a relative. Maybe this is contributory but I don’t think it would be different if I remained in the hospital. I had already started speaking fluently in the last 4 months of my last hospital post which I left in August this year. And I had stammered a lot when I was in a similar GP setting in my first year of training.

My testimony is not much about my freedom to speak fluently, but more about overcoming my fear and anxiety around speaking and meeting people. Fluency came as a bonus. I found out that as soon as I began to let myself stammer without feeling shame or fear, I stammered less. Those who never met me stammering will find it hard now to believe that it used to be a problem.

I am very grateful to the people who introduced the concept of “It is okay to stammer” to me. Iain Wilkie, for your work with the practice interviews. I participated last year. All the authors of the book "Stammering Pride and Prejudice: Difference not Defect".

I am grateful to Dr. Sunday Adelaja for his YouTube series on Self Confidence and all the other teachings. I am also grateful to all who encouraged me when speaking was so difficult including my family, my husband, my church and close friends. Guys, I am accepting speaking invitations now.

On this International Stammering Awareness Day, I would like to encourage everyone to provide a supportive environment for stammerers. Most of our problem is the fear, shame and anxiety from encountering a hostile atmosphere - one that does not tolerate or accept the stammering speech. When stammerers are free to be themselves, to say what they want to without embarrassing looks, to finish their sentences without someone cutting them short, to be heard and appreciated for the content of their speech and not the delivery, they thrive and can attain to their full potential. Be a stammering ally today!

My message to stammerers is “It is okay to stammer”. Feel free to stammer. Permit yourself to stammer. Do not let it stop you. You may need to work harder than everyone else at developing your self confidence. If you don’t stand up for yourself, who will?

Happy International Stammering Awareness Day!

Radiant ~ October 2021

Radianthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08128767609842309541noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4436539161202609679.post-87124797435115108362021-10-11T08:30:00.004+01:002021-10-22T19:19:02.233+01:00World King's Day

11th October is World King's Day. On this day, few years ago, a king was born. Let me introduce you to this king.

When I met my husband, I knew he was different from all the men I had known before him. I was not sure what the journey of marriage would be like with him but I knew two things which gave me peace and faith for a blissful partnership. He loved God and he was wise. I reckoned that if he loved God he could love me and if he made wise decisions, I could submit to him.

We have been in this for almost 3 years and I have come to know so many other sides to him that challenge, amaze and inspire me.

1. Perseverance - Relocating to the UK came with the hardship of periods of unemployment. I watched as he went through tons of job applications, company research, professional networking, interviews, rejections, feedback, courses, self development, volunteer work, freelancing, job loss, etc. I would have given up very early, were I in his shoes, but he never did. He always believed he could break into the system and he did.

2. Love - My husband does his best daily to express love for me in my primary love language. I can't say I do the same for him. In fact, I only discovered his primary love language 2 days ago and I was shocked. I had thought it was something else.

3. Loyalty - I have never seen a more loyal person in my life. The respect this man has for authority is second to none even when he completely disagrees with the said authority. He is very dependable. Anyone who has him in his team has got a gem.

4. Hardworking - It did not cease to amaze me that even when he was jobless, he slept less hours than I did. He works so hard at everything, be it his career, volunteer work, or self development.

5. Excellence - Any project he takes on, he takes ownership of it and he does his best to do it excellently. This comes with a catch though, or maybe a blessing in disguise. Because people know he will always do things right, he gets drafted into lots of projects.

6. A healthy self esteem - My husband is very self- aware and comfortable with who he is, not too much to become proud, yet very secure in his identity whether he has little or much. He celebrates the success of his peers and never feels a pressure to measure up. Rather, he competes with himself.

7. Tolerance - Like God, my husband is slow to anger. Which makes me so anxious in the rare occurrence of me sensing that he is angry. He understands our differences and he appreciates my uniqueness even when my behaviour annoys him.

8. Responsible - I admire how he takes care of his parents and siblings. The burden of his family is his burden.

9. Leadership - Some people are born leaders. He is one of them. Once he is in a group, people naturally gravitate towards him. Whether it is because he takes responsibility for the task at hand or because he has foresight and wisdom, I don't know.

10. Supportive - My husband has always cheered me on. When I was doubtful about my stammer, he would always tell me not to give much thought to it, that I could excel at whatever I wanted to, in spite of the stammer. It was like he never noticed the stammer. With him, I was always free to stammer.

This is my husband. This is the man I married. I am so proud of you, my King. I celebrate you today and always. May God bless the mother who bore you. May you know no lack in your life. May you excel in all your endeavours. I love you so much. Daniel loves you too. Happy birthday.

Radiant ~ October 2021
Radianthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08128767609842309541noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4436539161202609679.post-3919929067673274752021-09-30T09:36:00.001+01:002022-09-10T07:27:07.735+01:00Time and Life

Sunrise, sunset
One aspect I thought I needed to work on was my speech.

I prayed about it. My mom would lay hands on me and speak to my tongue daily while she was with us. Up until she left after six months, there was no visible result. I still stammered as bad. During that time, I began listening to Dr. Sunday Adelaja. I discovered that life is governed by rules and success in life is predictable. It can be achieved by anyone willing to study the rules and obey it. So I decided to quit the blame game and take charge of my life. I wanted to learn about this thing that caused me so much fear, this thing that had held me down, shied me away from reaching my full potentials. (To read about the impact stammering had on my life, click here.)

But the first step to having a problem solved is acknowledging that there is one and finding information already available on the subject. I had to first acknowledge that I stammered and then seek out information on the topic. My journey with stammering had involved lots of denial in the guise of positive confession. I think Christians are particularly at risk of this. In bid to be seen to have faith, sometimes we deny the existence of problems hence do not seek solutions, rather we pray and hope they go away.

I read research papers, listened to TED talks, joined online support groups, attended online conferences where I met fellow stammerers, and read books and blog posts on the subject. I was consumed by it. I needed to know all there was to know. I started learning several concepts including the social model of disability, stammering iceberg, stammering pride. I discovered that "it is okay to stammer" and that I had the responsibility of educating the public to accept this way of speech. Rather than trying to fix me to adapt to the majority, they needed to adapt to this equally valid way of speech. The problem with using advanced speech techniques to formulate a fluent speech pattern was that it only dealt with the tip of the iceberg. Underneath the faked fluency still lay fear, anxiety, feeling of helplessness, lack of control, dissatisfaction for not being able to fully express ourselves the way we want to. The freedom to stammer deals with the bulk of the iceberg.

When I permitted myself to stammer, instead of trying to hide it, I discovered that the fear and anxiety left and so most of the stammer actually left because fear and anxiety had exaggerated it. I no longer feel helpless, hopeless or angry about not being in control of my life and how I want it lived. I have since resumed work after the maternity leave and my work life has completely changed from what it was before I went on leave. I speak fluently, without fear of my speech tripping up on me, I say what I want to say (not having to substitute problem words), I take up teaching opportunties, I meet new people, and I am no longer in dread of the job. I am rather fulfilled. Now I am living free. Free to be myself, free to live out my full potential.

This is my testimony.

I guess the lesson for others is that while we pray, we should also take corresponding action for faith without works is dead (James 2:17). If you are waiting on God for something, pray about it, and also educate yourself regarding the matter. Learn the laws and principles that govern that aspect of life and obey them. The answer to your prayer may just lie in a book, a video or in discussing with someone whose gone through the same. My people perish for lack of knowledge. (Hosea 4:6)

May your deliverance come speedily.

Radiant ~ September 2021

PS: I came across speech therapy. In 2019, I paid a private speech therapist and drove 1hr to keep my 1hr appointments. She taught me several techniques to avoid stammering or minimise the stammer, including breathing exercises and speech techniques. I did not get better with these. I stopped after 5 sessions.

Last year, I engaged with the adult dysfluency service via the National Health Service and by then I had already started accepting the stammer and was now familiar with the stammering iceberg. So I told them I did not want to focus on speech techniques but rather on the negative emotions that accompanied the stammer. So it was more of a talking therapy. I had 3 virtual sessions. It was helpful as it got me looking inwards and reflecting but I had already done most of the work with all my research.
Long time no see. I have been off the radar, doing lots of work on personal growth. Today, I will like to talk about street evangelism and hear your take on it.

I visited London last weekend. On two separate days, while walking on the streets of the shopping malls, I was confronted by black Africans doing evangelism. First, I saw a white guy preaching with his microphone in front of the mall while black Africans were scattered across the street serving tracts. The next day I heard a man preaching with African accent through a microphone and was offered tracts by people who looked like Nigerians.

On the first day, I had passed 2 people who attempted to give me a tract. But in order to encourage them, I received from the third person. When I got home, I barely glanced at the tract before it was tossed in the bin.

The second day I didn't bother taking the tract. But I still wanted to encourage them so I told them why I wasn't taking it. "I'm a Christian", I said, "I'm born again". I added that bit 'cause in Nigeria when we did street evangelism, we found out that almost everyone was a Christian. So we would rather ask "Are you born again? " Whether that approach to street evangelism was right is another topic to debate.

But it all got me thinking. How effective is this kind of street evangelism in the UK?

When I was in Nigeria, I participated in evangelism a few times. I would accompany my mom to hospital visits where she would preach to patients. I joined school fellowship groups to preach in prison, villages and on the streets. And I have preached to friends one-on-one. Street evangelism was very popular. In fact, when I was little, I woke up daily to the sound of street evangelists shouting through their megaphone at 5am in our local language beckoning us to repent.

I have personally participated in street evangelism in the UK. First, while studying for my Masters degree. We shared tracts on the streets while some of us sang to draw attention. Not many people took our tracts. Who knows whether the very few that did only did so because they were already Christians and wanted to encourage us? Who knows if the tracts ended up in the bins as soon as they were collected?

Just before COVID-19 hit, I participated in street evangelism again a few times with my local church and an independent evangelism group in my community. Our method was to sing songs while some of us went to engage with people on the park. I think many liked the music, some stopped to watch. Some were open to be prayed for. I think very little said the sinners prayer. But when it came to getting contacts so as to follow up, they were very hesitant.

So lately I have been thinking:

Is street evangelism outdated?

The model of evangelism of shouting via megaphones in the marketplace, people going about the street handing out tracts and confronting passersby to ask "Are you born again?" may work in African villages but I think it may not be the most effective use of time here. I have observed very little results going by this model that it behooves one to ask "Isn't there a better way?".

And now I will show you the most excellent way. 1 Corinthians 12:31

Theodore Roosevelt said "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care ".

Until people can see the impact we have made in their lives, they may not willfully submit themselves to listen to us, less so (and a painful truth) listen to blacks.

How does Pastor Sunday Adelaja, a black Nigerian man, lead one of the largest churches in Europe with white folks making up over 90% of his congregation? His church engages in so many social projects that the community cannot deny her impact. People come seeking for solutions to their social problems which the church addresses. Along the line they are interested in hearing the message of the church.

Even Jesus went about doing good. Acts 10:38. He was solving their problems by healing their sick, casting out demons and multitudes came to hear him.

I believe that Christians can be more effective soul winners by serving people, meeting needs, solving problems. Then they will be the ones asking like they did to Jesus, "How can I be saved? "

Hence Christians should not take their jobs lightly. That is an avenue for service. Christians should look around their environment to discover problem areas and proffer solutions to them. Love is the most excellent way, even to soul winning.

Is street evangelism outdated?

How do you respond when you meet street evangelists? Is there a better way to do street evangelism beyond preaching or singing through a microphone and serving tracts?

Kindly share your thoughts below.

Radiant ~ September 2021

Radianthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08128767609842309541noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4436539161202609679.post-10451928352038856232021-01-21T16:43:00.000+00:002021-01-21T16:43:00.382+00:00How to make Coconut Rice

Coconut rice is one of my favourite rice dishes. Starting a blog in 2021 seems almost pointless. Yet some say if you find a tight niche, you could thrive. Where then does that leave memoir bloggers like me who write about practically anything going on in their lives? So that I am not perceived as jack-of-all-trade-and-master-of-none, here is what this blog is about.

Radiant’s blog is about ME - Chidiogo Nwosu a.k.a Radiant. I am my own mastery. I have been blogging here since November 2013. I started it as an outlet for my creativity, an online diary. Surprisingly, I got quite some faithful followers. My mission is to be a social influencer, to inspire people through my life's experiences. Hopefully this post will help you navigate easily through many of my wonderful write-ups.

About Radiant's Blog

I was born in a rich yet poor diverse country called Nigeria - popularly known as the giant of Africa.

Much of my primary school memory is hazy. However, I remember fondly that I frequently represented my school in competitions. I've penned some of my secondary school experiences in my FEDACAD tales.

Like many young girls, I've had my own share of guys approaching me for a date. In Nigeria we call it "chyking". My Chyking series details this.

I studied to become a medical doctor at the University of Nigeria and became one in 2012. During my internship year, I decided to explore my passion for music. Though wise and useful, some have lost hope in this activity as they tend to give up on their new year goals by the first quarter of the year. Sometimes, this is because they do not set monthly, weekly or daily targets to achieve their goals. So these resolutions never materialise. Research shows that those that set goals achieve more than those who do not. So here are 10 examples of goals to set for the new year.

10 goals to aspire to in the year 2021

1. Little wonder it makes the top of the list for most people. What if you also made contentment your goal for 2021? A man's life is more than the abundance of his possessions. Another goal could be to reduce expenses. What's the use of making more money if you are going to put them in leaking purses? You could target to keep an account of your daily expenses, review this account every month to see where your money is going, stop any unnecessary expenses and budget for each month. In addition, find ways to increase your income e.g. apply for tax rebates where applicable or work extra hours if you can.

2. Explore more talents / potentials

Compete with yourself and not others. Hence, now is the time to discover and explore new sides to you, find new hobbies, and learn new skills. To achieve this, you could target to spend less time on TV, social media or idle talk and channel that time to activities that build you up. You can decide to try one new area of interest every quarter. Use every spare time to study about it and practice, and then decide at the end whether to carry on or not. If it doesn't work out, well then you know your area of weakness. It is better to have tried something new and failed at it than live life wishing you did.

3. Now an adult, I also hear that you are the average of the top 5 people you spend the most time with. The relationships you keep influence your behaviours and actions. So if you want a better life in 2021, you should terminate friendships that do you no good and cultivate inspiring ones. Keep in touch with good friends weekly or monthly depending on the practicality. Remember their birthdays.

4. While some students will get scholarships covering all their tuition, accommodation and living expenses, others will have to find ways to fund accommodation and living expenses and probably, part of the tuition.

As at December 2020, when applying for your visa for a Masters in the UK, you are required to show proof of available funds for your maintenance, estimated at £1,023 per month (£1,334 for London residents) plus any outstanding tuition fees. As such, you are expected to show evidence of possessing £9,207 (or £12,006 for London) maintenance fees in your account prior to your visa application. You must hold this amount in your account for 28 consecutive days, the date of the closing balance being within 31 days of your visa application.

Finding this amount of money could prove difficult for many non-sponsored students. Some people borrow money to show proof of funds and have to pay it back before the start of the programme. This means that they still have to figure out how to survive in the UK. Let me show you how.

10 Ways to fund your accommodation and living expenses in the UK:

Work while studying. A masters degree programme in the UK is intensive but you can find time to work. The Tier 4 (student) visa allows students to work for a maximum of 20 hrs a week during term time and full-time during holidays. Common student jobs include caterers, open day volunteers, student callers, etc. There are off-campus jobs like mail sorters, carers and factory workers (e.g. in food production companies). From my experience, it is wise to have your living expenses for at least the first semester available before coming to the UK because the time runs so fast. Also, since you are still adjusting to the new environment, you do not want to be distracted and get poor grades. In addition, you have to apply for a National Insurance number before you can begin to work and this can take a few weeks.

Bring your spouse along. Your spouse can support your study expenses by taking up a job. They have no limit to the number of hours they can work. Minimum wage is currently at £8.72/hr. If your spouse is able to work 40 hrs a week on minimum wage, they would earn about £1,395 per month. This goes a long way. Remember that you have to show proof of funds for any dependent you are bringing along.

Keep your home country job. If your job is the type that allows you to work remotely, you could ask for a study break while you continue to work part time. Check the exchange rate of your country's currency to see if this is worth it as your expenses will be in Pounds.

Get a loan. 20 hrs a week work might not be enough to meet your need especially if you have outstanding tuition to pay. You might need to obtain a loan to offset that. International students do not qualify for UK government loan. You could search for student loans from banks in your country or ask family or close friends. Alternatively, there are private loan companies that offer loans to international students. But be careful with this option as you are not certain where you would be after your studies.

Reduce expenses by living in shared flat/house or with family. If you have family in the UK, you could take advantage of that. If not, you could live in a shared house/flat with fellow students. You would not have to pay for council tax if all residents are full time students. University halls of residence usually are more expensive than the off-campus houses by private landlords.

Make good use of student discounts and coupons. Many stores (including clothing shops, cinemas and restaurants) have student discounts. Always go with your identity card and ask at the counter if there are student discounts.

Make your own coffee. There is a huge coffee culture in the UK. You will be presented with several coffee breaks during your study. There is a temptation to buy coffee from the café every day, especially during the cold seasons and that could cost you up to £5 a day. Alternatively, there will usually be a student's kitchen around with a kettle or microwave and fridge. So you can easily make your own coffee. By doing this, you can save some money towards your accommodation and more important expenses.

Call home through WhatsApp. Phone calls to your home country, especially if in Africa, can be quite expensive. To save this cost, make good use of Wifi for WhatsApp calls.

Buy stuff from discount stores. Patronize the discount supermarkets and stores around you like Aldi, Lidl, Poundland, Poundstretcher, OneBelow, etc. Avoid convenience stores except when absolutely necessary. Buy in bulk.

Wait for clothing sales. Do not be tempted to buy all your clothing as soon as you arrive. Many shops have end of year sales. So if you start in September, you can take advantage of December sales. Why buy a pair of shoes for £80 when you can get it on sale for £10?

In conclusion, you can achieve your dream of a postgraduate study in the UK. First, try to get a scholarship; then consider the above steps to cater to your accommodation and living expenses if need be.

Has this been useful to you? week, I wrote about why you should pursue your Masters degree in the UK.
A common question I got asked was how to obtain scholarship or funding for the
Masters programme. I've given bits of advice regarding this in the past. But
today, I've decided to just pen down all I say to people for easy access.

I'm a
beneficiary of a few scholarships. First, I attended secondary school on a full
scholarship by the Federal Government of Nigeria covering tuition, boarding,
feeding, uniforms and exercise books. Then in 2016, I won the
Developing Solutions Masters Scholarship offered by the University of
Nottingham. This scholarship covered my full tuition which was £21,200.

My
husband has also benefitted from scholarships. He was a recipient of the
Total Nigeria National Merit Scholarship award at undergraduate level
and The Global Scholarship Award worth £10,000 which covered part of the
tuition for his Masters programme.

Some
scholarships require that you write exams - my secondary school scholarship and
husband's undergraduate scholarship. Others require short essays. For my
Masters scholarship, I answered the following questions:

get to the tips on writing a winning essay, let me give you some general advice
on getting a scholarship for your study.

1. Do not put all your eggs in one basket. Apply to as many scholarships as you can find. Don't only apply for the popular scholarships like Commonwealth and Chevening, apply to the unpopular ones as well. Check the funding page of the school you want to apply to study for any scholarships you might be eligible for.

2. Start early so that you can meet up with deadlines. Many scholarships have early closure dates. Apply to the school early. Many of the scholarships require you to secure an admission before you are eligible to apply. Since you are not sure how long the admission process might take, apply early so that you would have obtained your offer letter before the scholarship deadline.

3. Find out the application requirements early and begin to gather them. For my Masters scholarship, I needed to write IELTS because some of the scholarships required it. Also, I needed to obtain the transcript for my undergraduate degree. These processes could take their own time, hence the need to start early.

Now to
the tips that helped me write my own essay.

How to
write a winning Masters scholarship essay

1. <span style="font-family: ""Times New Roman"",serif; font-size: 13.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">Do your research. Read about the school, the course you want to study, look at the
modules, talk to students of the school. Your reason for choosing the school is
not just because they offer scholarships. Think about why you would choose that
school if you got the same scholarship opportunity in two other schools

2. <span style="font-family: ""Times New Roman"",serif; font-size: 13.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">Tell a personal story. This appeals to the emotional side of the judges. My approach to
my essays was not just academic. I told the story about how I am really
passionate about public health because of the lack of health information and
proper health seeking behaviours, saying for instance, how during the
Ebola epidemic in Nigeria my own mom advised me that a salt bath would prevent
infection. Be authentic though.

3. <span style="font-family: ""Times New Roman"",serif; font-size: 13.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">Show passion through your
experience. Start building your portfolio now by getting
involved in significant events happening around the area you want to study. I
had applied and got into the Regional Leadership Centre in Accra, Ghana for the
Young Africa Leaders Initiative (YALI). When I attended YALI, I had not yet
planned on applying for a Masters but when I started applying, I used that
experience to show my passion for Africa, development and leadership. So
before you even start thinking of a Masters programme, you could get involved
in projects, seek volunteering or leadership opportunities, or fellowships in
the area of your passion. I know a colleague who had done some community
development projects during his National Youth Service year and had pictures
where he received award for this. This was what he used in his application to
get a 100% tuition scholarship. In my husband's case, he used to run a career
mentoring organisation for secondary school students alongside his regular job.

4.
<span style="font-family: ""Times New Roman"",serif; font-size: 13.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">Show passion through education. I had done some free online courses on global health and public
health. If you have not studied the course at undergraduate level, show your
interest by taking courses and attending conferences.

5. <span style="font-family: ""Times New Roman"",serif; font-size: 13.5pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">Understand the goal of the
scholarship body and answer in those lines. For
Developing Solutions it was to make a difference in the development of your
home country. So I had to show passion for development of Africa.

6.

I searched the internet, asked questions, and shortly concluded I had to make applications to schools in the United Kingdom.

Some international graduates might be in the same shoes as I was. So in this post I would like to help you answer the question - Why come to UK for your Masters programme?

The Pros

1. High quality world-class education. The UK is known for its high quality education. Just google "Top Universities in the World" and see for yourself. Degrees from the UK are highly respected by employers. Check out QS Graduate employability rankings.

2. 1 year programme. Unlike programmes in the US that require 2 years, a UK Masters degree programme is typically for 1 year. Also, being an English speaking country, I did not need to take up a foreign language class before my study as would have applied if I chose Germany or any other non-English speaking country.

3. Scholarships are available. This was key for me. Many would be put off by the humongous tuition fees associated with a Masters degree in the UK but there are scholarship opportunities. While some are sponsored by international scholarship bodies, many individual UK schools have a scholarship budget. I got a full tuition scholarship from my school.

4. 2-year post study visa. A few years ago the UK government stopped issuing 2-year post study work visas to students on a Tier 4 visa. This discouraged some international students from pursuing postgraduate studies in the UK. Thankfully, it's been brought back this year. This means that you can apply for jobs and get some work experience in the UK after your Masters programme. The experience can boost your career prospects wherever you then decide to settle.

5. Application is easy. When I looked at the application process for USA-based schools, the process just seemed tedious and long 'cause I would have to write TOEFL/IELTS as well as GRE. With UK-based schools, I only needed IELTS to apply to certain schools. The school I eventually got in to, the University of Nottingham, did not require it because my undergraduate study was done in English.

6. You can bring your family along and they can work without restrictions. Unlike the USA, where spouses/dependents of students on F1 visas are not allowed to work, the UK allows dependants/spouses of students on Tier 4 visa to take up full time work (apart from doctor or dentist-in training) or be self-employed. This goes a long way in supporting the student.

7. You can work and study at the same time. In the US, there are certain restrictions to working while you're a student on F1 visa, like only being able to work on campus, except in exceptional cases. The UK has its own restrictions - you can only work for a maximum of 20 hours per week but it does not have to be just on-campus jobs.

Most importantly studying abroad, in the UK, gave me much exposure. Exposure to a developed country, exposure to possibilities I didn't know existed. Exposure to effective systems, rule of law, order, a civil culture where customer service personnel are very polite, where there is dignity of labour, where merit is rewarded, where feedback for quality improvement is actively sought and accepted.

The Cons

1. It is expensive. The UK Masters tuition fees for international students vary depending on the degree and university but could range from £5,000 to well over £40,000. My tuition for a Masters in Public Health was £21,200 (around 11.4 Million Naira at the time). Giving my salary then, I would have needed to work for 10 years while scrimping to save up that amount of money. And that excludes the cost of accommodation and living expenses. If you are able to get a sponsor or get scholarship then this becomes less of an issue.

2. It is cold. Coming from the heat of Africa, it took a while to adjust to the UK weather. Summer was great; in fact, there were heat waves at times. Fall, spring and especially winter days were cold. But then it's not as bad as Canada. I learnt to dress for comfort, or in other words, dress for the weather and not for fashion.

In conclusion, I would say it was very well worth it and I am grateful to the University of Nottingham and everyone who supported me for making it possible.

Are you considering a Masters degree in the UK? What are you most worried about? Have you studied as an international student in the UK? What was your experience? Last lockdown many people reported learning new skills especially home making skills like baking, cooking and teaching children. You might be searching for a new recipe at this time. Being at home on maternity leave has made me research more about new recipes. Now that I'm not rushing off to work early in the morning making do with some tea and store-bought brioche rolls, I can afford to make some luxurious and healthy breakfast. So I had potatoes and carrots and was thinking of what to do with them when I stumbled on a YouTube video. I modified the recipe a little bit to suit what I had. The thing I love about cooking as against baking is that you can be more flexible with cooking recipes. So if you have potatoes, carrots and eggs, you can recreate this recipe replacing all other ingredients with whatever you have available. So let's get cooking already.

List of ingredients (serves 3 adults)

3 British potatoes

3 carrots

1 green pepper

1 bulb onion

1 Tbsp thyme

1 seasoning cube

9 eggs

2 tomatoes

1/2 scotch bonnet pepper

2 tsps crushed chilli pepper

1 Tbsp black pepper

1 Tbsp curry powder

1 tsp ginger powder

Vegetable oil

Salt to taste

Method

1. The most challenging part of this is when I’m asked to say the NHS number. This is a 10-digit number which will usually have the number 4, 6 or 7 (my stumbling blocks). A few listeners are patient with me, probably having recognised the stutter from the start of the conversation. Most are not. A common response is “I’m sorry your line is breaking up”, or “The connection is poor, please can you repeat?” or worse still, they could hang up. At this point, I’m not only dealing with anxiety from the fact that the number won't come out of my mouth, but anxiety that the person at the other end may hear the wrong number (patient safety being at stake), and then embarrassment as I have colleagues on the table who can hear me struggling. Sometimes I’ve had to ask a colleague to help me call out the NHS number to the person on the phone or I’ve had to tell the person at the call end, “it’s not the network. I stammer. I’ll start again please”.

Handover - Hospital handover meetings are usually full of people from consultants to medical students. As a junior doctor, I’m expected to narrate the cases seen during the on-call shift, going through each patient’s biodata, background history, diagnosis, treatment so far, response and any issues during the shift. Woe betide me if there were too many patients. I still must go through the drill. This is my worst part of being on-call, yet I must go through this torture after every on-call shift (and in my last post, twice during each on-call shift). Even though nobody says so, I feel this guilt and pressure to talk quickly as I do not want to waste people’s time. It is just alarming how ignorant I have been regarding money matters. My mindset has completely turned around. Things I thought that mattered, no longer matter. Things that I never thought about, are now my constant thoughts. These series along with his book “Money Won’t Make You Rich” have completely renewed my thinking and lifestyle. Among many nuggets, the following are my take away tips:
<p class="p2" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 20.3px; text-align: justify; text-size-adjust: auto;"><span class="s1" style="font-family: ".SFUIText"; font-size: 17pt;">

<li class="li1" style="color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: justify;"><span class="s1" style="font-family: ".SFUIText"; font-size: 17pt;">Money is not to be spent but to be multiplied. These teachings have taught me not to immediately start thinking of what to spend on once I get some money in my bank account, but on how to multiply it. Only after money has been multiplied 10x am I qualified to begin spending it. Listen to the series to understand more.
<li class="li1" style="color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: justify;"><span class="s1" style="font-family: ".SFUIText"; font-size: 17pt;">After paying God (tithes), pay yourself. I’ve learnt to be religious about my savings. It shouldn’t be left to the last. I should come before my bills.
<li class="li1" style="color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: justify;"><span class="s1" style="font-family: ".SFUIText"; font-size: 17pt;">Don’t let them take away your money. There are so many pressures in life clamouring for your money. Budget your money and don’t let anything or anyone you’ve not planned for take away your money, no matter how noble the cause.
<li class="li1" style="color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: justify;"><span class="s1" style="font-family: ".SFUIText"; font-size: 17pt;">Money is not emotional. He teaches you to have a budget for giving/charity and stick to it. A lot of times, due to pity, we give away all our money to all that ask and have nothing left to save or invest. I’ve discovered that I can only be more effective in charity if I have more. So while I budget some money for charity, I must be multiplying money so that I can be in an even better position to do more good in future.
<li class="li1" style="color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: justify;"><span class="s1" style="font-family: ".SFUIText"; font-size: 17pt;">Don’t lend your money. Basically this means don’t lend money you cannot afford to do without. Many times people default and leave you stranded and this spoils relationships as well. So it's better to give what you know you can do without and don’t even expect it back.
<li class="li1" style="color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: justify;"><span class="s1" style="font-family: ".SFUIText"; font-size: 17pt;">Don’t eat tomorrow’s food today.

Recently in a group Bible study, a question was raised regarding how to deal with enemies, those we have confirmed through accurate prophecy are working against us and want our downfall. Another discussion with someone on the same topic also got me answering these questions:

Is it right to pray for the death of our enemies?

Can we specifically name a person and demand their death within a given period?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">The most quoted scripture to back this method of prayer is in Exodus 22:18 which says, "Suffer not a witch to live."

Note that I am not referring to spiritual warfare of binding and casting of spirits and taking spiritual authority by our words. I am only referring to the practice of planning and projecting the physical death (through spiritual warfare) of human beings whom have been considered "witches" or enemies of progress.

Here are my thoughts.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">With regards to the above scripture, let's look at the context. The two verses after that are as follows:

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Anyone who has sexual relations with an animal must certainly be put to death (v19). <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Anyone who sacrifices to any god other than the Lord must be destroyed (v20).<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">I will like to put forward that in the old covenant, certain sins called for the death penalty. As seen in the above scriptures, they put to death not just witches but also anyone caught in idolatry and bestiality. Also, other sins like adultery (Leviticus 20:10) and homosexuality (Leviticus 20:13), etc were punished by death.

Now under the dispensation of grace, Jesus introduced mercy and forgiveness. They were going to stone the adulterous woman, but he intervened and asked her to go and sin no more (John 8:11). Paul and Silas cast out evil spirits from the demon-possessed slave girl (Acts 16:16-24). They did not kill her. So if we no longer kill adulterers but lead them to repentance, why should we still kill people who practice witchcraft?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">This leads to the question - what should we do to these wicked human beings? Remember witches are simply evil spirits working with human bodies. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers (Ephesians 6:12). When the human body dies, they will simply find another body to operate through, hence your problem does not die when the enemy dies. It only takes another face.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">We should love them.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Jesus says love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you (Matthew 5:44). <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">God does not wish that any man should die but that all would come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). Sending someone to hell earlier than they would have gone by praying for their death does not glorify God. What glorifies God is delivering them from the shackles of the enemy, changing their eternal course from hell to heaven (Ezekiel 18:23). If you understand the reality of hell, you will not wish hell on your worst enemy. God can save even the most vile of men. Even Jesus being crucified on the cross, prayed for his crucifiers. He said, "Father forgive them for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34).

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

When Jesus' disciples wanted to call down fire because some people did not receive him, Jesus rebuked them and told them that they did not know the kind of spirit they had (Luke 9:54-55).

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Furthermore, Bible tells us not to gloat when God is punishing our enemy or he would be displeased with us and turn his anger away from that enemy (Proverbs 24:18). What does rejoicing over the death of an enemy mean then? We have to be careful.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Lastly, let's borrow a leaf from the Old Testament. The 2 prophets Elijah and Elisha had different approaches to dealing with their enemies. While <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Elijah would call down fire from heaven to consume them (2 Kings 1:10), <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Elisha would give them food and drink and send them home (2 Kings 6:22).

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">What was the result? Elijah's enemies kept coming back (2 Kings 1:11-13). Elisha's enemies never came back (2 Kings 6:23). Note that earlier in his ministry, Elisha, like his mentor, cursed the boys who taunted him and they were mauled by bears. But that was the last time he did so.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">So we see that in deed, love is the most excellent way. God has given us a spirit of love (2 Timothy 1:7).

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">I know this is a controversial topic but the above is the understanding that by God's grace I have to share. Please leave any comments below and be kind to one another.

Love doesn't keep a man from his destiny
Real men go to fight fight for their families
You're a strong girl waiting behind doors
Praying that your man won't be out long
Cheer up pretty woman, guess who's coming soon
It's your Superman. It's your Superman

Cheer up. It's your Superman
It's your Superman. It's your Superman.
Cheer up. It's your Superman
It's your Superman. It's your Superman.

When it gets tough on the battlefield
It's your love that gets him over the hills
Grenades and a gunshot wound
Won't take the place where your heart once stood
Cheer up. Pretty woman. Guess who is coming soon
It's your Superman. It's your Superman.

Cheer up. It's your Superman
It's your Superman. It's your Superman.
Cheer up. It's your Superman
It's your Superman. It's your Superman.

Your Superman can't wait to get home girl.
You're the girl of his dreams and the rock in his world
Every Superman needs a Super woman
You're the one he needs and all he's got

Today I experienced the love of God in a new dimension. I experienced it through the hands of selfless, loving, thoughtful and generous human beings.

My hubby had said we would go out on Sunday (today) for a dinner. Since it was valentine season, I was unsuspecting. After church, we went for grocery shopping, got back home, had lunch and were watching a favourite YouTube series. Then he informed me that we had to leave at 4:30pm. I put on my dress, applied a light make up and was set for the adventure.

He blindfolded me so I couldn’t guess the venue by the route he took. When we got there, there were already about 15 people gathered in the house of our friends, the Idahosas, with plenty of food, chewables, drinks, decorations and music. We played baby themed fun games and danced.

I was indeed pleasantly surprised.

I was reminded again the pleasant feeling of receiving gifts. I am challenged to be the one who gives people this feeling.

To all who planned, organised, honoured the invitation and brought gifts to celebrate the gift of a growing being in our lives, my prayer for you is that you will never lack help. You will always have love around you. My God will replenish your pockets. You will abound in abundance for every good work.

Thank you so much for your kindness.
